Problem & Solution
Millions of vehicles
with expired tags in California pollute the air, threaten safety and drain state resources.
Law enforcement can’t tackle it alone.
tagSnapper empowers
everyday citizens to report
expired tags through a moble app.
Your snaps help clean the air, protect
communities and earn rewards.
Why it Matters
California’s air is the most polluted in the nation. We have 6 of the top 8 cities for air pollution.
The largest source of that pollution is automobiles.
A small percentage of automobiles known as gross polluters cause a disproportionate and significant amount of air pollution.
Air pollution impacts the heart, lungs and brain. It affects childhood cognitive development and is linked to aggression, violent crimes and depression.
Beyond Health & Air Pollution
See how the Uninsured, the Law, Fairness and Money further impact the problem.
UNINSURED
Expired tags often mean uninsured vehicles. According to the Insurance Information Institute, 1 in 6 drivers lack insurance in California. Uninsured drivers are twice as likely to be involved in hit-and-run accidents. These accidents, fueled by a lack of accountability, leave innocent Californians injured and communities heartbroken.
When uninsured drivers cause accidents, you could be left paying the bills. Uninsured vehicles are more likely to be poorly maintained, spewing harmful pollutants into the air we breathe. Uninsured drivers are more likely to skip car maintenance and repairs, leading to unsafe vehicles on the road. This puts everyone on the road at risk. In 2023 alone, California saw over 2,000 accidents involving uninsured drivers, resulting in hundreds of injuries and tragic losses.
By taking action against expired tags, you’re contributing to safer roads and stronger communities.
tagSnapping helps identify these vehicles.
LAW
California law mandates current registration tags: California Vehicle Code (CVC) § 5204(a) requires all vehicles on state highways or parked off-street to display valid registration tags. This includes both the month and year stickers. Driving with expired or missing tags is not optional; it's a legal violation.
Enforcement challenges and AB 256's impact: While millions of vehicles on California roads violate this law, realistically, citing every offender isn't practical for law enforcement. However, new legislation like AB 256 raises concerns about further limiting enforcement capabilities, potentially detrimentally impacting public safety and road regulations.

FAIRNESS
Expired tags means drivers are dodging their fair share and aren’t contributing to maintaining our roads and vital infrastructure like highways and bridges.
This financial burden falls on responsible drivers creating an unfair system. Reporting expired tags helps ensure everyone pays their dues. By holding others accountable, you’re not just snapping a tag, you’re investing in a more equitable California for all.
MONEY
The DMV mails nearly 33 million vehicle registration renewal notices to Californians every year. Approximately 3.73 million of these vehicle registration accounts, worth an estimated $425 million, become delinquent.
That means more than one in ten vehicles.
